You are going to use the ARROW keys to move, Z to jump, X to fire, and use the shift key to change between one character and another, taking turns in taking both of them towards the finish line at the end of each level.
Just like in the series' other games, you need to avoid falling into the pits, don't hit the monsters head-on, and avoid any other kinds of dangerous traps and obstacles, as you collect coins to get a big score, get mushrooms to grow bigger or get firepower, and don't lose three lives, you lose the game.
Also, if even one of the two avatars you control dies, you both lose the game, so make your teamwork as good as possible to stay up.
